Nasir Mahmood

I am Associate Professor and chairman of the Department of Research and Assessment at Institute of Education and Research (IER) , University of the Punjab. I am involved in teaching to Master’s classess in research and assessment meant to produce professional in test development, managing large scale testing, analysing large scale data, and report writing. I am also involved in teaching on Continuing Professional Development courses and Doctoral programme in educational psychology. I graduated from university in mathematics and physics before doing my masters in science education from University of the Punjab. I completed my doctorate from Tokyo Gakugei University, Japan as MONBUKAGAKUSHO scholar in the area of Educational Psychology. I have completed my post-doctoral fellowship from University of Leeds, UK. Before working at the University of the Punjab, I taught physics and mathematics in high and higher secondary schools in the Pakistan.

Interests

My research focuses on teaching and learning science in constructivist framework, with particular emphasis on nature of students involvement, empowerment of students to practically take charge of their learing, studying adjustments needed to shift teachers role from traditional to facilitator, impact of teacher’s beliefs about science and learing on the student learing, assessment of student learing refelctive of their competencies, dynamics of classroom interaction through development of classroom interaction analysis framework, development of scales for measuring development psychological traits in students of various age. I am particularly keen to supervise research in these areas, and also supervise research on a wide variety of topics related to science education, learning, classroom dynamics and testing.

I am also on the panel of supervisors approved by
Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan for awardees of their scholarship.

Hong Kong : Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme

Established in 2009 by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC), the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD programmes in Hong Kong's institutions.

Those who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in UGC-funded institutions of Hong Kong, irrespective of their country of origin and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply. Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability / potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.

The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of HK$20,000 (approximately US$2,600) and a conference and research related travel allowance of HK$10,000 (approximately US$1,300) per year for the awardees for a maximum period of three years. 135 PhD Fellowships will be awarded for the 2010/11 academic year.
